Understanding the Role of Counseling in Pain Management
Individual therapy for chronic pain is best supported in a chronic pain/recovery group, with the goal of stabilization of how one views and interprets pain. Meditation and guided imagery are utilized in therapy for healing with both modalities. The length of treatment is again evaluated on the initial assessment session. As soon as possible, recommended alternative care providers are utilized and consulted as well as client referrals to acupuncture, chiropractic care and massage therapy. Although medication (pain management) may be necessary, the more a client works with the idea that less medicine (validated by their physician) is more, and the more one invests in their own physical and mental health, the better.
Physical health challenges often lead to a cumulative effect of anxiety, depression and despair. Family and community support assists the client in so many ways that it is highly recommended by Helen!
